Money 101
The foundational concepts that make everything else about money easier to read.
What's happening
Financial literacy is rarely taught as a system, so most people assemble their understanding from fragments: a parent, a mistake, a headline, a colleague who sounded confident.
Why it matters
A small number of core concepts, understood properly, does more for financial judgement than any quantity of tips. Fundamentals are also what make the rest of the coverage on this site legible.
Forces behind it
- Cash flow
- What arrives and what leaves, and when. Timing causes more difficulty than totals do.
- The cost of debt
- Interest is a price paid for time. The rate, not the label attached to the borrowing, determines how expensive that time is.
- Reserves
- Liquid savings that convert an emergency into an inconvenience, and prevent a short-term problem from becoming a long-term one.
- Compounding
- Interest applied to interest, which works patiently in either direction depending on which side of it you are standing.
- Inflation
- The slow erosion of purchasing power that makes an unchanged balance quietly worth less each year.
- Systems over willpower
- Automated, default behaviour survives a bad week. Intentions generally do not.
What to watch next
- Whether a habit rests on a system or on willpower
- The interest rate on every balance actually owed
- How many months essential expenses could be covered
- Fixed obligations as a share of reliable income
- What a "small" recurring cost totals over a year
- Whether savings are genuinely accessible when needed
